Musical Monday: Saints and Angels (Sara Evans)

So, as I've mentioned several times now, I've made A Sight to Dream Of free for the next few weeks. Basically now through Mabon.

Sam always thinks of Marsha as his angel--because she's mystical and always seems to come to his rescue when he needs her to--so I listened to a lot of angel-themed songs while writing this book.

I think I've talked before about how Marsha is at the heart of the Oberon series, so obviously she and Sam appear in most of the books (well, she's in all of them. He's not in book one, and is out of town for a lot of book four, but you get the idea) and this album has several songs that remind me of them in various books.

But anyway, this song is very evocative of the time of my life when I was immersed in writing this series. But  as I've ALSO mentioned previously, it's a long book. You'll need a LOT of music to get you through it. So here's a link to the playlist.

Bookstore Excerpt from: A Sight to Dream Of

It was supposed to be Love Your Bookshop Day a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted to post this excerpt from (apparently) the only fictional bookshop I've created. I know, shocked me, too. But, as luck would have it, the book this excerpt is from (A Sight to Dream Of) is currently FREE. So, it's a win-win.

Marsha wandered through the crowded stacks of Digressions, searching the shelves for books on mice as pets. It was not a subject that commanded a lot of shelf space in a store whose inventory of new and used books was heavily weighted towards women’s literature, natural remedies and quilting, but she had never yet failed to find exactly what she was looking for here. In that way, she’d often thought, Heather and Ginny’s store was as magically oriented as her own.

There had to be a book here, somewhere, that would contain the information she needed. The trick was in recognizing it.

“Okay, I think I got it,” Heather called from the back room. Marsha smiled as her friend bustled towards her bearing a slim volume. “I thought I remembered seeing this back there. We just hadn’t had a chance to shelve it yet. Guess it was waiting for you, kid. Must be your lucky day.”

“That would be a switch,” Marsha muttered, as she followed Heather through the narrow aisles. “Because so far, the week’s been lousy.”

“What’s that?” Heather asked, half turning.  She accidentally brushed against a hip-high stack of books as she did. The stack started to topple and both women reached to steady it.

“Oh. Cool.” Heather raised her eyebrows as the top book slid neatly into Marsha’s outstretched hand. “I gotta tell you, Marsha. You do that really well.” 3

“Yeah, thanks,” Marsha answered faintly. An uncomfortable awareness washed through her as she stared at the book in her hand, at the silver foil cover and the bold black type. Unlocking the Patterns, Keys to Understanding Japanese Candlesticks.

“So, you want that one, too?” Heather inquired, lips twisting into a crooked smile.

“I guess so.” Marsha sighed unhappily, tearing her gaze away from the cover with an effort, and handing the book to her friend. “Sure. Ring me up.”

Marsha was soon headed back up Main Street towards her teashop, but the tingles of apprehension that had hit her as soon as she’d touched that book grew worse with every block. She found her footsteps slowing as she passed through the small redwood grove that lay at the heart of Oberon’s downtown, bordered on all sides by shops and restaurants, and the city’s municipal buildings.

Reluctantly, she sank down onto one of the benches there. She was aware of a chill that had nothing to do with the perpetual shade cast by the big trees. There was a terrible heaviness in her heart as she fished the silver book out of the bag Heather had given her.

According to the jacket, the book had been written by a top trader, one of the masters in the field, a man by the name of Sam Sterling. Marsha skimmed past the laudatory appellations. The name meant nothing to her, except for the strange misgivings in her heart. She turned to the back jacket flap, read an even more laudatory biography, and still found nothing to disturb her. Then she turned the book over. She found herself faced with a photo of the author, and forgot how to breathe.

Wine Wednesday: Grape Creek 2022 Ser-en-dip-i-ty

The 2022 Serendipity is a very understated wine. The rose water aroma is even stronger this year than it was in the 2021. The flavor of rose is there, as well--again, almost to the exclusion of everything else. Although there may be hints of cedar and baking spices. The label calls it "an interesting red wine"  and I can find very little to add to that. It's a dark, soft-bodied wine. I think it would pair well with an interesting pasta dish--maybe a lemon-ricotta agnolotti dish. Or, being as this is Texas, after all, a nice smoked brisket.

It's very much a sit-outside-by-the-river-after-dark-and-watch-the-stars kind of wine. There's a hint of toasted oak that makes me think it would pair well with s'mores. It's the kind of wine that makes you sorry that you cancelled your membership. Because, damn.

If you'd like to read my thoughts on the 2021 Ser-en-dip-i-ty, you can find that blog post HERE

There's not a lot of wine in A Sight to Dream Of (Oberon, book 2) but it's available as a FREE download for the next few weeks, so be sure and check it out!https://books.bookfunnel.com/OberonFirstFour

Musical Monday: I Could Not Ask For More (Edwin McCain)

So, as I've mentioned several times now, I've made A Sight to Dream Of free for the next few weeks. Basically now through Mabon.

It's set in September, which...okay, I know we're not there, yet, but I'm feeling it, you know? And it's a sweet story. I love Marsha and Sam. I love the interactions between all the other characters. There's a wedding--the first one I ever wrote. There's a Coastal Cleanup event--and just FYI, my job at the Berkeley Coastal Cleanup for nearly a decade was the one I gave Marsha in this book.

And--fun fact--the very first cleanup I attended after I wrote this book, someone actually DID find a bone on the beach and for a thrilling half-hour or so, it looked like I was going to get the chance to see how my interpretation of events was going to match up to reality. Ultimately, it turned out to be NOT a human bone, after all.

Anyway, this song brings back that time of my life. But I'd actually recommend the whole playlist. It's a long book. It requires a LOT of music.

Diner Excerpt From A Sight to Dream Of

So…today’s excerpt from A Sight to Dream Of was inspired by my musical choice for the week, The Cowboy Junkies’ song, Angel Mine. That diner saw A LOT of action in the series. Unlike the bookshop I mentioned last week. I’m really feeling like there’s a series set in a magical bookstore somewhere in my future. We’ll see.

Nick sipped his coffee as he studied the photos arrayed in front of him. Beside him the jukebox played quietly, until some idiot selected an early Rod Stewart song, and he switched the damn thing off. The last thing this case needed was a soundtrack.

Sure, he’d like to find a reason to believe there was another explanation for what he was seeing. And if he thought about it long enough, he knew he could find a way to make himself believe it was all a mistake. But he was trying real hard to toe the line between objective fact and wishful thinking.

He put down his cup and drummed his fingers on the Formica tabletop, as he stared at the contents of the file. On the surface the photographs seemed innocent enough. There were no seedy motels to be seen. No impossible-to-misconstrue romantic clinches. No obviously clandestine meetings. As blackmail photos, they would be almost totally useless. And as evidence… Well, evidence of what, exactly?

“Shit, Paige, what the fuck were you up to? Surveillance reports, too?”  Goddamn, the woman was obsessed!

And wouldn’t it be nice, if that was all this was? The temptation to write the whole thing off as just some weird and isolated mental aberration on Paige’s part would have been nearly overwhelming, if that were all the file contained. But what was left in the folder was not so easy to explain away.

“Hey, Nick. How’s it going?”

Nick looked up to see Marsha approaching with Sam in tow. He had just enough time to slip the folder back into the file box on the seat beside him, before she was sliding into the bench on the opposite side of the booth.

“I got something for you,” she said, and he had to sympathize with the wary, uneasy look on Sam’s face as he took the seat next to her. The woman looked too pleased with herself to be up to any good at all.

“Yeah? What’s that?” he asked, as noncommittally as he could. And he wasn’t surprised when her grin grew wider.

“You still need someone to help you get into Paige’s computer, right?” Her eyes twinkled as she nodded at Sam. “I think Sam’s your man. He knows all about computers.”

Sam looked horrified. “Whoa! Hold on a minute, I never said that!”

Marsha turned her smile on him. “Hey, there had to be some reason I suddenly got the urge to come out here today. You think it was coincidence that you both happened to mention computers to me within the same twenty-four hours, and now we all end up here together? C’mon, it’s obvious, isn’t it?”

Nick sighed. “I think that kind of thing is only obvious to you Marsha.” He looked at Sam. “Do you know how to go about hacking into someone’s computer without their password?”

“Why do I feel like I’d be incriminating myself, if I say yes?” Sam shot a rueful glance at Marsha.  “Yeah, I could probably do it for you. It might take some time, though.”

“What do you think you’ll find on her computer, anyway?” Marsha wanted to know.

“I’m not sure.” Nick shrugged. He finished his coffee and pushed the cup aside.  “But I knew her well enough to know that she kept everything on that machine.  Appointments, notes, phone numbers, story ideas, her journal. At the very least, it should give us a better idea what she’d been working on, or if she’d been planning to meet with anyone that day.”

“You think she was killed because of some story she was working on?” Marsha sounded surprised at the idea, and Nick couldn’t help wondering if she’d like some of his other ideas any better. He even briefly considered showing her the file, maybe she could get some sense of what Paige had been thinking. But he wasn’t ready to share that yet, and definitely not with Sam sitting here.

“It’s certainly one possibility,” he told her, as he got up to leave. “So, Sam. If you’re game to give it a try, why don’t you stop by the station later this afternoon and I’ll show you what we’ve got?”

“What?” Sam reeled in his wandering thoughts with difficulty. “Oh, right. Yeah, I’ll do that. Glad to help.”

“Right,” Nick said. “Well, see you later, then.”

“Oh, and Nick?” Marsha sounded slightly self-conscious, and Sam was surprised to see that she was blushing again. “You think maybe you could not mention it to Scout that you saw me here today? She’s already getting certain...ideas...about things. I’d rather not give her any more to work with.”

“Ideas, huh?” Nick looked amused as his glanced shifted to Sam and back again to Marsha. “All right. You’re keeping our secret, after all. I guess I can return the favor.”

Sam watched him walk over to the cashier’s counter, before he turned to Marsha.  “So, you still gonna tell me you’re not embarrassed?” he asked, but he smiled as he said it.

“Hmm?” she responded vaguely, not meeting his gaze. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He watched in amusement as she fiddled with the tabletop jukebox until she’d restored the volume on it. And then as she transferred her attention to her menu, studying it with every appearance of interest, although he was willing to bet big money she already knew exactly what she wanted to eat.

With anyone else, he’d definitely have been annoyed, as well as insulted. But it was hard to be angry with someone who was so clearly determined to save you from dangers you didn’t even know existed.

Appointment books. Phone numbers. Story ideas. A journal.

Damn right he wanted the chance to take first crack at that computer. When he broke it, he’d see where a little creative editing of files might be in order. He’d been way off base, these last few days, thinking of Marsha as a witch—even a good witch. He recognized her now for what she truly was. His very own guardian angel. In the oh so desirable flesh. And after just a few days in Oberon, he wasn’t even slightly surprised to recognize the song currently playing on the jukebox. The Cowboy Junkies were singing Angel Mine. And didn’t that figure?

Musical Monday: Angel Mine (Cowboy Junkies)

So, one of Sam's nicknames for Marsha is Angel--in part because of all the times she pulls his bacon out of the fire, usually without even knowing she's doing it.

Music is important to Sam and the songs he listens to really mirror the things that are happening in his life. So of course, there's a scene in A Sight to Dream Of where the two of them are eating lunch at a diner and this song comes on the jukebox.

ICYMI: I've made A Sight to Dream Of free for the next few weeks. The link is below.

This Week's Free Read: A Sight to Dream Of

A Sight to Dream Of is book 2 in the Oberon series. And I'm making it free from now until September 20 (Mabon). This is Marsha and Sam's story. It's a somewhat sweet story about two very different people finding love where they least expect it: with one another. I mean...it's romantic suspense, so people die, people lie to each other, people overreact, get upset and act badly (looking at you, Nick!) and there is, in fact, a third act break-up, which is entirely necessary. And, ICYMI, Kelly Jamieson has written a blog post about that, which you can read here:

 https://www.kellyjamieson.com/blog/2026/7/16/the-third-act-breakup

But anyway... I loved writing this book and hopefully you'll love reading it.

Musical Monday: Fountain of Sorrow (Joan Baez)

Just a reminder: I've made A Sight to Dream Of free for the next few weeks. The link is below.

There's a scene early in the book where Sam (who's staying in Celeste's cabin) stumbles across a photo of Marsha and is just captivated by her. This song has a lot of the same feel to it.  (You can download that excerpt here:

Stuff Your E-Reader TODAY!!

So, today is another Stuff Your E-Reader Day! For one day only (maybe two--it depends on the venders) you can download over 1200 romance ebooks for FREE!

https://www.romancebookworms.com

My contribution this time around is Giada Mazzi is Living her Best Life--a book I absolutely love! Giada is one of my all time favorite characters.

Giada Mazzi is Living her Best Life

Games We Play series 3/Whole Latte Love

life is more than just the lies we try and tell ourselves about what we’ve done and who we are.

I guess the truth is that I never stopped loving Ben. And I never stopped imagining how different my life might have been if he were only the person I needed him to be, instead of the person that he is. Which is silly, right? I mean, truly; it’s laughable. Because if he were someone else, he wouldn’t be him.  And the world is already full of people like that. What good is one more gonna do me?

Besides, if I’m honest, Ben wasn’t ever the problem. That was me. I was never the person he believed me to be. Oh, I thought I was, in the beginning. I tried hard to be, and that worked for a while. Sort of. But eventually I reached the point where I had to make a choice between living life for myself, or for everyone else.

And when it came right down to that…how could I not choose me?

This Week's Free Read: Touch of a Vanished Hand

Touch of a Vanished Hand  is book 5 in the Oberon series. This is Sinead and Adam’s story. Touch is set six months after book 3, Sound of a Voice that is Still, which is Sinead’s twin sister, Siobhan’s story. That’s also the book where we’re first introduced to Adam. (And yes, both titles are lines from the Tennyson poem, Break, Break, Break).

I had a great deal of fun making them mirror or be opposites of each other. This book is also a total ode to summer and marks the halfway point in the series. When I started writing Touch, I was living in the house that provided the inspiration for Sinead’s farmhouse. I was also working a job that got me up VERY early, which gave me the opportunity to view A LOT of sunrises.  Factors that you’ll probably appreciate more after reading the book. And it’s FREE! for the next week, so what are you waiting for?

Touch Of A Vanished Hand
Oberon Book 5.0

Sinead Quinn has always been something of a drifter.   But now, with her ex-husband trying to blackmail her, and her ex-boyfriend's widow trying to put her in jail, she has no choice but to go to ground.  What better place to hide than with your family?   After all, what are sisters for?  Especially when you're a twin.

But the first rule of hiding out, is to keep a low profile.  And that does not mean kissing your sister's boyfriend (even if he can't tell the two of you apart); rescuing a troubled teen; or taking a highly visible job as hostess of Oberon's most celebrated new inn.

Adam Sasso has always dreamed big.  But big dreams beget big complications.  First, his goal to turn the vineyard he inherited from his grandfather into a world-class winery is threatened by a mysterious saboteur.  Next, his plan to run the finest bed & breakfast Oberon has ever seen, is broadsided by a hostess who wants to run him.  Finally, it seems his fondest wish, of finding love-everlasting with the soul mate of his dreams, is about to go up in smoke when he can't convince her that they're destined to be together.

This summer, it's going to take all the wizardry in Oberon to craft a happy ending for the drifter and the dreamer.

p.s. Touch of a Vanished Hand was the first book I wrote that was set primarily at a winery.  Since then, of course, I’ve gone on to write several books in the POUR DECISIONS series along with my friends and fellow authors Kate Davies and Kelly Jamieson. Learn more here: books2read.com/rl/PourDecisions

Kelly also has a pre-POUR DECISIONS winery story. Check out—You Really Got Me—here: https://www.kellyjamieson.com/you-really-got-me

p.p.s. And, while I’m on the subject, Touch of a Vanished Hand also contains a very fun tequila drinking scene. And, as it happens, Kelly visited me in Napa while she was writing her LAST SHOT trilogy, which is set in a tequila bar. So, of course, we had to research that, as well. You can find that series here:  https://www.kellyjamieson.com/last-shot-series

Musical Monday: Drops of Jupiter (Train)

So, I'm posting this today because Touch of a Vanished Hand is free this week and this is a song I remember vividly from the time when I was writing this book. We were living in a house that was close enough to the local fairgrounds that you could hear the music as clearly as you could have if you were attending the concert live. Train (and this song in particular) was one of the bands we got to listen to in that way that summer.

Wine Wednesday Mandola Cabernet Sauvignon

So, I believe this Mandola wine was made using Texas grapes, but the company is a little cagey about its sources. The restaurant (the original restaurant, I believe) got its start in partnership with a local winery (in Driftwood, TX). But--because Driftwood (and the nearby towns of Wimberley and Dripping Springs) is/are very small and somewhat insular--I've heard that the partnership went sour due to personal reasons. And now, you can't enjoy the winery's wine at the restaurant that exists basically on its grounds.

People, am I right?

But to continue. This is the second Mandola wine I've tried. And I did get it at one of their restaurants, where I enjoyed it with a dish of cheese ravioli and tomato sauce. Because sometimes, what you really crave is something simple and basic (but still really, really good). I thought it was surprisingly soft bodied for a Cab.  The color was garnet fading to rust. On the nose were scents of violet, cedar and black cherry. The flavor held hints of vanilla, smoked oak and red currant.

I only got a single glass with my lunch (okay, it was a 9 oz pour, but still!) and now I wish I'd bought a bottle because I've been craving more of it ever since.

Musical Monday: Age of Aquarius (The Fifth Dimension)

If your algorithm is anything like mine, you've been seeing ALLLLL the astrology posts these last two weeks and have probably heard all you could ever want to hear about Barbault's Basket. And if not, look it up. It sounds awesome.

But what it reminds me of is this song from waaaay back in the day. I used to listen to this when I was writing In the Dark, because that's also (partially) set in the very late 1960s.  Desert Rose quotes lyrics from it to a very cranky Conrad.

Children of Night 1.0

When you live forever, a few mistakes are bound to happen.

Vampire Conrad Quintano has been around for centuries -- long enough to know falling for a human is a terrible idea. Much less falling for adventure-seeking hippie Desert Rose and agreeing to raise her babies.

Raised in virtual isolation, Marc and Julie Fischer have never known their unique status in the world. But once they're in San Francisco, the family reunion is nothing like they anticipated and they're thrust into a world they're completely unprepared for.

Musical Monday: To Make You Feel My Love (Adele)

Okay. Legs and Clay have already made their decision vis a vis a first dance song--and this isn't it. But I think it's going to feature in a fictional wedding somewhere in my future. But I think the only wedding I've currently got on my schedule is a vampire wedding--and this isn't for that one, either.

But at some point, y'all; I promise this will get some page time.

Nice Day for a Wine Wedding: A Pour Decisions Romance

PG Forte

books2read.com/WineWedding

There are a lot of reasons people choose to elope. We’ve already figured out most of them.

 Clay

How hard could it be to plan a simple wedding? If recent experience has taught me anything, the answer is very. Once Legs’ Uncle Geno got involved things started spiraling out of control. We really should’ve eloped.

 Allegra

I’m not saying Clay’s wrong about Geno, but it was his family who turned our rehearsal dinner into a circus. But we’re not eloping. We’re going to work out the problems and have the wedding of our dreams. Assuming we both show up for it.
