Romance Writers Weekly ~ 4th of July ~ #LoveChatWrite

Today's question that we're attempting to answer as part of the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop is, "Did you celebrate the 4th of July? Care to share a recipe? What's the favorite dish at your celebration and why?"

Short answer: not this year. We did grill, however, and I made my one of my husband's favorite addd-ons, spiced butter to go on the grilled corn. It's an old recipe from the 1980s. I think it originally came from a newspaper, and I no longer have an actual recipe. But you don't really need one. And to be honest, I don't make it the same way every time, anyway. Simply take some softened butter and add whatever you like. I like to add grated garlic, turmeric and lime zest, minced cilantro (or parsley, if you or someone you love is a cilantro-phobe) cumin, curry powder, paprika, chili powder, cayenne, and salt and pepper to taste.

As for a favorite dish, that varies from year to year and depends on who you ask. I love bean salad, or baked beans, neither of which my husband can stand. My go-to bean salad recipe comes from a cookbook called Forum Feasts which was a regional cookbook put out by a school in Waldwick New Jersey in 1973. It's something of a cult classic.

A couple of years ago (it was 2020 and everyone I knew was getting very experimental in the kitchen) I decided to make a S'mores pie in an effort to create one dessert that more or less everyone in my family would eat. My son ONLY eats pie, while my husband and daughter-in-law will only eat pie if it's chocolate--and even then they'd still rather eat cake. So it's a somewhat difficult task. But the S'mores seemed to do it. I combined several recipes to get what I wanted, basically a graham cracker crust, a chocolate pudding filling and a toasted marshmallow topping. It was good, even though I'm more of a fruit pie person myself.

Now, hop on over to Leslie Hachtel's page and see what she has to say. And be sure to check out her book,  Payback.

Several surprises await Beth Abbott when she returns to her small town. As a detective, she expects very little in the way of interesting crime. But victims of a female serial killer change that. And then, there's Tom. Another detective with the local force, he wants to capture not only the perpetrator but also Beth's heart.

PRE-ORDER FUNNEL OF LOVE NOW!

Baker Rocco DiLuca is not a happy camper. He’s just found out that his baby sister is getting married—to his former best friend—and he's not invited. But that's not even the worst part. They’ve hired someone else to make their wedding cake!

He knew he and Kristy hadn't exactly been speaking to each other, but he hadn't realized they Weren’t Speaking to each other! Now he has to figure out how to repair their family feud, or forever keep his distance. Unfortunately, his best hope for success is the woman he considers his competition.

Stephanie Sands thinks the Chamber of Commerce’s mentorship program is a great idea! She’s not ashamed to admit that her boutique bakery, Sugar Kink, isn't quite making it. Yet. But the mentor she's been assigned, Rocky D, isn’t just traditional, he’s positively medieval. It’s no wonder his sister wants nothing to do with him!

Can they put aside their differences (and the insane attraction they feel) to help each other out? Or will their dreams fall as flat as a failed souffle?
