IF ONLY IN MY DREAMS

An Oberon Christmas Story

'Twas the night before Christmas and Scout Patterson was flying home to Oberon after a business trip to LA. But now, thanks to a chance, mid-air meeting with an angel, she's dreaming of a weird Christmas—one in which she sees what the town would have been like if she had never returned.

All Scout wanted this holiday season was to be home for Christmas. But when your home is in quirky, magical Oberon, California, things are rarely ever that simple!

Musical Monday: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (John Legend and Esperanza Spalding)

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs. That hint of bittersweet yearning, that hope for a better future--that's what Christmas means to me. And this version really fits this year's Oberon Christmas release fiesta (now in its second of three weeks!).

EXCERPT:

Two days before Christmas…

It’s your typical late December day in the City of Angels where, despite the music blasting from the car’s speakers, it is not beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The sky is blue, the weather’s mild and the traffic is horrendous. As the musical marathon continues, one classic carol segueing seamlessly into the next, I feel a holiday headache coming on.“Isn’t there any other music we could listen to?” I finally groan.

Larry Mitchell, my agent and friend, shifts his attention away from the traffic clogging the 405 long enough to grin at me from beneath the brim of his seizure-inducing, red and green sequined ball cap, the one with the blinking LED lights that spell out HO-HO-HO! across the front.  “C’mon, Scout,” he chides. “Where’s your holiday spirit?”

“What holiday spirit?” I’d like to know. “When have you ever known me to get all holly-jolly just because the calendar’s down to a single page?”

Larry sighs reluctantly. “Never.”

“Exactly.” It’s not that I’m anti-Christmas, but…well, no, actually. I guess I am. And, unlike the grinch, I do know the reason. Everyone’s expectations are too high this time of year. I was just a kid when I realized that “merry” was not a guarantee. It’s a wish, a prayer, and, far too often, a forlorn hope. The last few years have been wonderful, but I know how fast that can change. Christmas is the time of year that really hits home.

“I guess I hoped things would be different,” Larry says. “That moving to Oberon and finding your happily-ever-after would’ve made you…happy?”

“I’m happy!” I quickly protest. I mean, of course, I am.  How could I not be? I’m living the dream! But there’s a reason Christmas Future was the spirit Scrooge feared most; happily ever after is a long shot at the best of times. “Look, just because I don’t dress up in silly outfits or sing along with every…” Shit. Too late, I notice the self-conscious look on Larry’s face. Does he think I mean him

“Is that the time?” I ask in a desperate bid to change the subject. “Your clock didn’t stop, did it?”

“I don’t think so.” Larry casts a worried glance at the display screen, then his face clears. “Although, that would be funny, wouldn’t it?”

“No.” I glance uneasily at the traffic crawling far too slowly toward the airport. It’s two days before Christmas. If I don’t make my flight, there’s no guarantee I can get another. I promised my son that I’d be home in time to trim the tree. I can’t let Cole down. “Unless you think missing my flight would be funny?” It’s a pretty popular trope in those holiday romcoms he’s so addicted to, so maybe he does.

But Larry shakes his head. “No, Scout. It’s funny because it would be like George’s watch, you know?”

“No. Who’s George?”

“George Bailey?”

“Ah, right.” Larry’s obsession with It’s a Wonderful Life is the stuff of legends. The movie forms the centerpiece of all his Christmas parties—like the one I was forced to attend last night. “You realize the most likely reason his watch stopped was that it got wet when he jumped into the river to save Clarence, right?”

“Pffft. That’s just what George wanted to think. It was working fine once Clarence returned him to his own life.”

“Yeah, because it had dried out by then.”

“What about Zuzu’s petals?”

“What about ’em? It’s a movie, Larry. The petals were a plot device—that’s all.”

“It’s a film,” he insists. “A great film. And film is one of the lenses through which we view reality. Every detail is fraught with meaning.”

I’ve heard this before, and I’m not convinced. “The story is ludicrous.” Now, there’s a movie quote, if you like, from The Big Lebowski—a really great film. “Every person in the alternate Bedford Falls was living a sad, miserable existence just because George wasn’t there to prop them up? Who has that kind of power?”

“No man is an island, Scout. Every choice we make affects those around us.”

“Uh-huh. And you don’t find it strange that no one in the entire town could’ve chosen to be happy?”

“Old Man Potter was happy.”

“Yeah, and that’s another thing. Potter steals the deposit and gets away with it because everyone else sacrifices their life savings to make up the difference. They’re covering up a crime!

“You’re totally missing the point of the story.”

“Am I? What’s the point then—that crime really does pay? I know what my husband—the cop—would have to say about that.”

“And what do you say about it, Princess?”

“The only thing any sensible person can say: Bah humbug.”

Wine Wednesday: Ocho Blanco 2023 (Salt Lick Cellars)

This is the wine I drank on Thanksgiving this year. It's made from almost equal parts Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne grapes that were grown just down the road apiece, in Driftwood, Texas.

Salt Lick is predominantly a barbecue restaurant--it may be my current favorite BBQ stop, now that the one in downtown Kyle is gone. *Waaah!* So, as you might imagine, most of its wines go great with barbecue. I actually reviewed their BBQ White wine last summer. You can find that here, if you're interested.

https://rhymeswithforeplay.blogspot.com/2024/08/wine-wednesday-salt-lick-bbq-white.html

The two wines could not be more different. While the BBQ White hass a subtle sweetness, this wine is drier and more acidic. In fact, the taste reminds me of the flavor of Lemonade Berry, which I got to sample while volunteering at the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, California. (NOTE: the wine does not taste like lemonade. It has a taste reminiscent of Lemonade Berry tea). You can read more about that, here:

https://naturecollective.org/plant-guide/details/lemonade-berry/

This is a very drinkable wine. I can contest to this as I drank most of the bottle myself. There aren't a lot of other drinkers in the family. And they all live elsewhere, atm. We did not have a smoked turkey, but I think it would have paired particularly well with that. I felt that the taste was a little delicate when paired with roasted chicken, but still enjoyable.

There were notes of apricot, almond, and honey on the nose, as well as a faint hint of lemon chiffon--again with the almost lemon notes! The flavor is very bright and crisp. I tasted notes of oak and some decent minerality along with the cranberry-lemonade berry flavors noted above.

Romance Writers Weekly ~Christmas Short Stories ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week's prompt, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop is,  "Hallmark movies are known for their delightful predictability. Can you write your own in 500 words or less?"

And you know what? No, I can't. lol! It takes me more words than that just to describe one of my holiday stories! I love Hallmark movies. When my mom was recovering from her broken neck (and out of her mind on pain meds) We watched them all day/every day. My dad hated the predictability.  But he used to watch murder mysteries--ain't nothing more predictable than that!

Anyway, I try to write at least one Holiday story a year. Last year's Christmas Angel was the most Hallmarky of the bunch. This year, I'm releasing FIVE Christmas stories--one every Sunday in December. So, I'm running low on my Sugar Plum Fairy Dust.

I do have three very short stories--still longer than 500 words--available as free reads on my website, so I think that'll have to be my contribution for the week. You can find them here: https://www.pgforte.com/only-for-the-holidays

Now, hop on over to Brenda Margriet's page to read her holiday short! And don't forget to check out her book, The Promise of Frost.

☃🤩 THE PROMISE OF FROST 🎅🎄
A Seasoned – and Seasonal – Novella

Only 99 cents for the holiday season!

An adventurous kitten, a curious dog, and a matchmaking eight-year-old guarantee this will be a holiday to remember.

Luca Tannon’s new neighbour is a sexy but surly single dad. Which is all for the best since she’s intent on reclaiming her life after a toxic long-term relationship.

Caleb Frost won’t let anything distract him from ensuring his son’s first Christmas as the child of divorced parents is perfect. And that includes the irritatingly intriguing woman living next door.

Everything is going as planned…until it’s not.

(Single Dad, Christmas/New Years, Neighbours to Lovers, Steamy, Slow Burn, Open Door. Luca 32, Caleb 41)

SPICY NICK

Read Naughty List Series: https://amzn.to/3Zeof11

It’s beginning to look a lot like NIX-mas!

Nick Greco is getting worried. His wife has never been a big fan of the holiday season, but this year she seems more distant than ever before. In fact, the last time that he can remember seeing her this distracted was right before their wedding—when she tried to back out of marrying him.

Can you get cold feet after the fact? Is Scout feeling overwhelmed by the holidays? Or underwhelmed by…gulp…him?

Whatever the cause, Nick has a plan. He’s going to spice up their marriage and put the heat back in the holidays. And when he’s done, Scout won’t be saying, “Bah Humbug!” She’ll be saying, “ho, ho…OH!”

Tuesday's Tea: Live Reading!

I have some interesting news to announce!  I'll be giving a live reading from two of my recent Christmas releases later this month--and also giving away books! Because: Christmas. Duh!

The Blank Space Yoga studio in Kyle, TX will be hosting me (because they're wonderful. And if you're at all into yoga and anywhere in the area, you should definitely sign up for a class or two!) at 4 pm on Saturday, December 21st.

I'll be reading sections from Christmas Angel and Spicy Nick, and discussing a little bit about the books and how I came to write each of them. There will be refreshments and a chance to chat and ask questions. I love talking about books and don't always have a captive audience--so I'm excited!

Musical Monday: Feels So Good (Chuck Mangione)

This is not a Christmas song. I was planning on posting ONLY Christmas songs this month since I'm releasing FIVE of them. But I was over on my Oberon blog posting about one of my new mugs, and ended up on Memory Lane, instead of Santa Claus Lane.

These things happen.

Anyway, this song is from one of the (very few) albums I listened to non-stop when I was first married, so there you have it.

I think it's pretty perfect for Nick, one of the two main characters in Spicy Nick, which released yesterday. So...pretend there are jingle bells in the background? I dunno. It's a good song. Definitely spicy.

Release Day for Spicy Nick!

As I think I mentioned last week, I try to do something fun for my readers every year around the holidays. This year, I’m releasing a different winter-and/or-holiday-themed story every Sunday in December.

Today’s release is called Spicy Nick, which is releasing as part of The Naughty List. When I saw the covers for the series, I was intrigued, but I really didn’t need to add another Christmas book to my WIP pile. Then I saw the title, and I knew I had to grab it, even though I had no idea what the story would be about, other than that it would feature Nick Greco, the hero from my very first published book, Scent of the Roses

As it happened, I had a short Christmas story featuring Scout (Nick’s wife) all written and ready for re-release (it had first appeared in a fun holiday anthology called Holiday Kisses). If Only in my Dreams sends Scout on an “It’s a Wonderful Life” style adventure to an alternative version of Oberon.

In essence, Spicy Nick is the sequel to that story—and answers the question, what happens when Scout returns to ordinary reality?

So why is Spicy Nick releasing a week earlier than If Only in my Dreams?  Well, that’s easy. I’m an “eat dessert first” type of person. I didn’t want to make readers wait an entire week to find out “what happens next?”

Anyway, I’m very excited about this release. It’s the first all-new Christmas story I’m releasing this year, and I think it’s even sweeter, cheesier and sappier (and I mean that in all the best ways!) than last year’s release, Christmas Angel. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

As I mentioned above, Spicy Nick is part of “The Naughty List”. You can read all about that here: https://amzn.to/3Zeof11

Wine Wednesday: Pelee Island Empress Orange Wine

I received this wine as a gift. I'd been talking about orange wines, for some time, with a friend of mine and when we got together, we both brought each other bottles of orange wine--which we then drank in quick succession. This is what I recall.

First of all, it's gorgeous. The color is a deep gold with an orange cast. The nose is floral, pineapple and guava with hints of applesauce.  It tastes like apples and pineapples too, with hints of tangerine and  something fresh and herbal. It's very delicate so I'd want to pair it with something that wouldn't overpower it. Like afternoon tea, scones, and fresh fruit tarts, maybe cheese and crackers?

I ended up drinking it at room temperature. I think if it had been colder I might have gotten more ideas for what to pair it with. This is not a dessert wine, but I think it would go well with some desserts. I don't think breakfasts wines are a thing, but perhaps they should be? I'd definitely nominate this wine for that category.

Otherwise, I think this would go best for either brunch or tea. Or perhaps a light lunch, perhaps with Spaghetti al Limone?

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Diversity ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked to think about the, "Many cultural and religious holidays are celebrated in December," and to "Discuss the importance and impact of diverse characters and relationships in your stories."

The story I'm featuring this week has nothing whatsoever to do with this topic. So, I guess I'll just talk about the subject in general, rather than trying to tie it back to the book. I love exploring different types of characters and different relationships in my books. It's an unfortunate tendency, in some ways, since it's hard to build an audience when your readers never know what they're going to get from one book to another. But I'm also writing for myself, and I want my fictional worlds to feel real--which means the people who live there are diverse, their relationships are diverse, their lived experiences are different from mine--and from each other.

It's hard at times, because you don't want to be stepping on anyone's toes, and you don't always know what you don't know! But I think it's important to try, all the same, to normalize the idea that people aren't all the same--and that there's no reason why they should be!

To quote Maya Angelou: “diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

Now, hop on over to Jenna Da Sie's page to find out what she thinks!

Musical Monday: Eighteen (Alice Cooper)

This goes out to my nephew who turned eighteen last week. And actually, I stole the idea to post this song from my SIL who posted it on her FB page first. lol!

But I LOVED Alice Cooper when I was eighteen. And, with the last Oberon book (And Shadows Have Their Ending) about to go live--three of the main characters are eighteen. One has her birthday in the course of the book--it seemed especially fitting.

High School is a bit of a sore subject for me, at the moment. But Alice Cooper memories are always good.
