Ashes of the Day on KISS!

So I just found out that Kiss is featuring Ashes of the Day on their LGBT History Month Seasonal Shelf from today until the 9th. You can check it out HERE

BLURB:  Everybody has secrets...but some have the ability to destroy them all.

Damian and Conrad's road has been a rocky one, and Damian is struggling to trust in the relationship he and Conrad now share -- what seems like a perfect love. After all, it's fallen apart before, why couldn't it do the same again?

Secrecy and conflict within the nest continues to grow, and Georgia's hold on the deadly secret she carries begins to erode. What she hides threatens their entire species...

EXCERPT:

December 31, 1999

New Year’s Eve

Damian leaned against the railing of the second-floor balcony and cast a jaded eye over the crowded ballroom below. The decorations were a tad overdone, in his opinion. Gaudy gold-and-silver Mylar festooned every surface—the bar, the tables, even the walls. The glare all but blinded him. Overhead, a billowing mass of champagne- and platinum-colored balloons were tethered to the ceiling, awaiting the stroke of midnight, when they’d be released. The last day of the year had dwindled down to the final hour. Y2K was on the verge, that ticking time bomb that would shortly send the world hurtling back toward the dark ages…or not.

Either way, Damian could not find it in himself to be concerned, or even very interested, in the fate of the world. The new millennium, as most people counted it, was about to begin. For the time being, it was still 1999 and the throng of people gathered on the hotel dance floor was certainly partying like it.

Exhibiting far more enthusiasm than skill, the crowd sang loudly along with Prince’s signature anthem as they bounced and gyrated to the music. The once-familiar song struck a bittersweet chord in Damian’s heart and he closed his eyes as nostalgia overwhelmed him. How many times had he danced to this same record back when it was first popular? He didn’t feel even remotely like dancing tonight. Hadn’t felt like dancing in years.

Memories rose in his mind of a supple young body pressed tight against his own, warming his back, more often than not. He remembered arms holding him possessively close, sweet lips dropping kisses all along his cheek, his neck, his shoulder…

He remembered the feel of strong hands splayed on his hips, guiding him as they moved together, thrusting, grinding, taunting each other with graphic reminders of everything they’d be doing together later in bed.

Oh, how he longed to feel that way again, careless and wanton, desired, loved. Oh, how he longed to hear that sexy voice whispering in his ear.To feel those muscular arms encircling his waist or his neck, or wrapped around his shoulders. To see that smile, hear that laugh, just one more time.

Knowing those wishes would never come true, that those days of joy and innocence were lost to him, gone for good, never to return, did nothing to improve his mood.

Folding his arms across his chest, he surreptitiously touched the small gold rings with which his nipples had been pierced. The rings had been Paul’s originally, a final gift of sorts. Since he was Vampire, the pain had been mild and fleeting. The tiny wounds had healed almost instantly and had done nothing to ease the heavy sense of loss that weighed against his chest. Perhaps if the physical pain had been more intense, more prolonged, more on par with his emotional pain, it might have helped distract him from his inner turmoil. As it was, all he’d had to make do with was Conrad’s anger. While that was certainly painful to endure, it didn’t so much detract from Damian’s distress as add to it.

“Slaves were once made to wear such things,” Conrad had complained when he learned what Damian had done. “Is that your wish?To be thought of as a slave now? Is that how you want people to think of you? Is it how you want them to think of me?”

¡Ay, puñeta!” Damian had snarled, baring his teeth and shocking himself with his own boldness. “Déjate de leches. Tell me, who are these people about whom you’re so concerned? And what has any of it to do with you? Are the rings yours? Did you force me to wear them? No! So why should you have a say in this at all? Why do you even care what I do?” It was not his usual habit to disregard his sire’s wishes so recklessly or to respond so rudely to his complaints. No one spoke to Conrad in that fashion. No one without a pronounced deathwish, that is.

Is that what it’s come to?Damian wondered. Am I so weary of drawing breath I’m looking to end it all?Perhaps he was.

“Silence,” Conrad commanded. “You go too far. Have you forgotten who I am that you dare speak to me in this manner? Are you trying to make me lose my temper?”

Damian looked away. For all that a shudder ran through him when he contemplated the likely result of Conrad’s losing his temper, he still couldn’t honestly say no, that wasn’t exactly what he was trying to do. He needed something, didn’t he? Needed something drastic and extreme, something strong enough to pull him out of the abyss of grief he’d fallen into. Anything was preferable to what he was feeling now.

“Everything you do concerns me,” Conrad said after a moment, his voice lower but no less intense. “Don’t ever think otherwise. You’re a part of me, Damian, a part of my family, blood of my blood. Nothing will ever change that. And I will always have a say. Always.”

And that, Damian thought, was precisely where the problem lay. It was obvious that what Conrad objected to most of all was the idea of someone else’s “mark” being made visible on Damian’s body—a body Conrad still thought of as belonging to him, however little he wanted anything to do with it anymore.

Yes, the small bits of metal would last for centuries—another of Conrad’s complaints, and far more valid than the rest, in that at least it was true. They were as permanent a reminder of Paul as any Damian could think of, something he would carry with him wherever he went, something he could keep symbolically close to his heart for potentially the rest of his life. But what right had Conrad to rage about that either? None at all. Not when he himself had two living, breathing vampire children to remind him of his last lover. As a bequest, they had no equal. As a memorial, nothing else could come close. Of that Damian had no doubts whatsoever. They were his one saving grace, the only things that made his life worth living…

“A penny for your thoughts,” Conrad said, appearing at Damian’s elbow with two glasses of champagne in hand.

Damian started. As his mind returned to the present, the first thing that struck him was that the same song was playing—whether again or still he didn’t know. Memories washed over him once more and his heart twisted in grief. How was it the years could flash by, while the minutes lagged? Time was cruel, fickle, wearisome. How much more could he bear before it broke him?

“What’s wrong? Is one penny not enough? Perhaps you’re holding out for more?”

“What are you talking about?” Damian snapped. “More what?”

Conrad frowned. “Why must you scowl at me in that fashion? I did not invent the phrase and I’m quite sure I used it correctly. If you think I meant to imply your thoughts were not worth very much, I assure you you’re mistaken. I merely intended to inquire what was on your mind.”

Damian sighed. “Of course. I beg your pardon. Your use of the vernacular is exemplary. But I have nothing whatsoever on my mind—not even a penny’s worth.” He waved at the dance floor. “I was merely observing the crowd.”

“Ah.” A pleased smile curved Conrad’s lips. “Getting hungry, are we? Good. I’m pleased to hear your appetite’s returning.”

“No, I’m not particularly hungry.” There was only one taste Damian was craving, and as he had virtually no chance of satisfying that craving… “It all seems somewhat pointless, I’m afraid.”

Conrad’s smile disappeared. “Here,” he said, handing Damian one of the glasses. “Take this, at least. You look as though you could use something.”

“Thank you.” Damian took the glass and looked at it with distaste. Here was something else he’d felt no inclination for in well over a decade. “But I’m not, as they say, in the mood for it.”

“Hold onto it just the same,” Conrad said when Damian attempted to give him back the glass. “You’d do well to keep up appearances.” He studied him for a moment then asked, “Damian…you would tell me if there was anything you needed, wouldn’t you?”

“Of course,” Damian replied dutifully, lying again because what was the point of anything else? The truth wouldn’t do either of them a damn bit of good.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ How did you get started? ~ #LoveChatWrite

It's time for another Romance Writers Weekly Blog Hop. This week's question is, "How’d you get started in your career? How'd you get to where you are today? What's next for you?"

Wow. So much to unpack here. I've always written and I'd considered myself a writer for all of my adult life. In my teens and twenties I confined myself to writing short stories and poems. It wasn't until my kids were school age and I realized they didn't even know that I wrote that I decided to write a book. One book led to another, and here we are today.

I have to credit the many wonderful authors I met through the organizations such as RWA, EPIC and Angela James' From Written to Recommended for helping me find publication and keeping me on track. I've also had several wonderful editors (including the aforementioned Angela James) whose support has been invaluable.

What's next...? Oh, that's so much harder. I've been focusing a lot of my efforts in the last year on learning more effective marketing and promotional strategies. As a result, my writing speed has slowed considerably. Hopefully, what's next includes finishing the books I've committed to in a timely manner!

Which means that I'm going to get back to it right now!

Now, hop on over to Jill Haymaker's page to learn about how she got started writing! And be sure to check out her new release, Montana Pines Winter Romance.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Holiday Plans ~ #LoveChatWrite

Join us this week on the Romance Writers Weekly Blog Hop, as we discuss the upcoming holiday:

Memorial Day Weekend is coming up. What traditions do you and your family have? Will you start any new ones?

Growing up, Memorial Day meant one thing to me: my sister's birthday. She pretty much owned the holiday at that point. Since then, most of our "traditions" have consisted of firing up the grill, or maybe hitting the beach. But THIS year...all bets are off.

See, we've moved again, and whereas last year my sister was a ten minute drive away, now she's a three hour flight. And our move has taken us away from the coast (so no beaches) and into the heart of BBQ Land, so we're real cognizant of our amateur standing when it comes to grilled or smoked anything.

One holiday tradition I won't be skipping this year is my annual "write a short Christmas story months in advance" tradition. I've got my candy canes stockpiled and I'm almost ready to go. Counting On Christmas will appear in the upcoming Let's Get Naughty anthology (see link below). And, I just have to say: I'm in love with the cover!

Now, hop on over to Jill Haymaker's page to learn about her traditions. And happy holidays!

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Writing Tools ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week the authors of the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop are answering a question posed by Brynn Paulin. "Do you have favorite writing tools or things that are a must while you write (particular pen, scent, sound, etc)?"

I think my answer is gonna have to be yes and no. I have plenty of "must have" tools, but they vary from book to book. Usually I need a playlist, or a particular album to help me keep my focus and drown out distractions. Depending on the book, I might find a particular incense or scented candle helps keep me in the mood. And then there are my beverage choices--and the right drinking vessel. Which is how I've ended up with A LOT of mugs.

Basically, I search for whatever tools will help to keep me grounded in the fictional world I'm creating. Sometimes it's a special crystal, a themed-mug, or a new perfume. Sometimes it's a new tattoo.

For my upcoming release, Funnel of Love, I've been relying on brunch drinks, Jersey memorabilia, and cupcakes to get me through my writing days. I love my work.

Now continue on to Leslie Hachtel's page to find out what tools she uses!

Murder Most Notorious

A beautiful homicide detective and a sexy cold case guy have to team up to find a vicious axe-wielding killer.

Brutal murders have shocked the city and all the evidence points to a twin sister once thought dead. So many twists and turns in this action packed romantic thriller you might get dizzy. And so much passion.

Funnel of Love

Rocco DiLuca, owner of DiLuca’s Italian Bakery, is not a happy camper. He’s just found out that his baby sister is getting married—to his former best friend—and he's not invited. But that's not even the worst part. They’ve hired someone else to make their wedding cake!

Stephanie Sands thinks the Chamber of Commerce’s mentorship program is a great idea! She’s not ashamed to admit that her boutique bakery, Sugar Kink, isn't quite making it. Yet. But the mentor she's been assigned, Rocky D, isn’t just traditional, he’s positively medieval. It’s no wonder his sister wants nothing to do with him!

Can the two bakers put aside their differences (and the insane attraction they feel for each other) and learn to work together? Or will their dreams fall as flat as a failed souffle?

Summer's about to get HOT with over 100 free erotic stories--one month only!

Includes my short vampire story, Blame It On The Voodoo!

What’s a little black magic among friends?

Vampire Rene Boudreaux is more than a little annoyed. It seems sexy voodoo queen Zirondelle Doucette has got him under her spell. Can Zee convince Rene that the only real magic is love? Or will he continue to blame it on the voodoo?

EXCERPT“It’s getting to where you can’t swing a dead chicken around here anymore without it smacking into one damn psychic or another.”

Zirondelle Doucette couldn’t help the grin that spread across her face as she listened to her Aunt Serafina’s complaints. Her aunt stood at the window of their family’s shop, staring out at the street, and Zee didn’t have to guess too hard to figure out the cause for her discontent. Another “damn” psychic had recently put out her shingle in the previously vacant storefront directly across from their own.

“And if it’s not a psychic it’s a card reader,” the other woman continued, grumbling crossly. “Or a palm reader. Or tea-leaf reader—”

“Or a purveyor of Voodoo essentials?” Zee suggested, holding up the little gris-gris bag she’d just finished assembling.

Serafina turned her head to glare at her niece. “Don’t sass me, Zee. You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“Yes, Ma’am, I do.” Ducking her head, Zee started in on the next charm. She knew it wasn’t psychics per se with whom her aunt had a problem. Serafina was a tolerant soul, not the kind who’d ever take a stand against anyone else’s religion or spellcraft or spiritual beliefs. It was the idea of all those make-believe mystics making a mockery of their family’s calling that was trying the older woman’s temper, and not without cause.

The Doucette family had owned and operated their establishment in the self-same Royal Street location for several generations, dealing in authentic rituals, in candles and jujus, talismans and spells. It was hard not to take it personally when your way of life was turned into a kind of circus act by greedy imposters. But as Zee and her aunt both knew, the charlatans did in fact have a place and a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

Oh, how the tourists loved them. They ate up their acts and purchased their trinkets as eagerly as they did the beignets at the Café du Monde. Or jazz on Frenchmen Street. Or hurricanes in Pat O’s Courtyard. It was all part of the Crescent City mystique, like Po’ Boys and crawfish, pralines and beads. In an odd way, they kept things safe. They kept the merely curious from straying into dangerous territory.

“Oh, Lawd.” Aunt Serafina’s sudden gasp caught Zee’s attention.

She glanced up in surprise. “Auntie, what’s wrong?”

“It’s him.” Serafina scurried back behind the counter where her niece was working, babbling nonsensically. “He’s back. He’s coming this way. What should we do? What does he want this time?”

“Do about what?” Zee asked, feeling mystified and mildly exasperated. “Who’s back?” She loved Serafina; truly she did. Her aunt had taken Zee in after her parents passed, without question or hesitation—the only member of their somewhat eccentric family who seemed to have any idea about what to do with a bewildered little girl who’d suddenly been orphaned. Zee would never forget the older woman’s kindness but, all the same, there were times, like now, when dealing with her aunt seriously tried Zee’s patience.

The Doucette family had a certain reputation; they were known for being fierce and fearless. They prided themselves on it, in fact. But Serafina had always been unusually timid for a Doucette. Right now, her pale eyes, also unusual in a Doucette, were wide with fear, the pupils dilated; her voice was but a whisper. “Monsieur Boudreaux.”

Boudreaux. The name itself meant very little. It was as common as dishwater around those parts. But between the look on her aunt’s face and the singing certainty in her own heart, Zee knew exactly which Monsieur Boudreaux Serafina meant. She meant Rene Alcide Boudreaux. Zirondelle’s Monsieur Boudreaux. Dominant. Vampire. Master.

But not her master. No, not yet.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Childhood Memories ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week's Romance Writers Weekly blog hop question is: What is the one thing that immediately sends you back to childhood? Is it a food, a scent, a swingset?

That's such a great question! But there's no way I can pick just one. Here's a (partial) list in no particular order.

1. Chocolate ice cream--but not just any chocolate ice cream. I actually had a conversation about this quite recently with my daughter. There's a certain type of chocolate ice cream--I wish I knew what brand (brands?) so that I could summon the memory genie whenever I wanted to, but I don't--that immediately sends me back to one particular day in my childhood. I was probably four or five years old and had walked to a playground several blocks away from my house with my grandmother. I know it was summer because after I'd played there for awhile we walked over to a nearby ice cream shop slash soda fountain. It was noticeably cool and dark inside, coming in from the hot, bright day, and we sat on stools at the bar and ate ice cream out of little metal dishes that were sweating from the cold.

2. Chamomile. When I was a child my family used to vacation at a farm in Vermont. The yard in front of the farmhouse was filled with chamomile. It was the first time I'd ever encountered it and still to this day, whenever I smell it, I'm transported back in time. For just an instant, I'm standing on the big blocks of granite that served as the steps up to the front porch, watching as the horses we were going to be riding on were saddled.

3. This one particular Italian Restaurant I walked into the other day. OMG--the smell! It was like walking into my Italian grandmother's kitchen on a Sunday afternoon after she'd been cooking. I'm sure I've been to a gazillion Italian restaurants--some that were actually IN Italy--but this was different. This was very, very, very specifically my grandmother's kitchen. I suspect it's ruined me for all other Italian restaurants for the foreseeable future.

4. Tomato Plants. The scent takes me back to my uncle's garden and I'm walking through rows of plants with my father on our way to harvest a few ears of corn for supper.

There are also a lot of objects that remind me of my childhood, but they're just not as powerful as scents and tastes.

Now, please pop over to A.S. Fenichel's page to learn about the things that prompt her childhood memories.

BEN The heart attack I thought I had turned out to be an anxiety attack. My doctor’s orders—take a month off from being Mayor of Roseville. Bulldozed by my large but tightknit family, I agree to a yoga and meditation retreat in Southern California. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the woman who owns the place would turn my world upside-down. Portia is too young for me. Geographically, too far away from me. She’s also everything I never knew I wanted.

PORTIA When my friend asks me to help her cousin-in-law manage his stress, I agree immediately. I’d do anything for a friend. She told me he’s the mayor of her town, so I’m expecting some old guy. Far from it. Ben Lane is six-feet-two inches of I-want-to-strip-you-naked-and-take-you-to-bed man. I’m turned on the minute I see him. How I could go from someone who’s never been infatuated to I-can’t-live-without-you is some kind of miracle. I’m pretty sure the miracle is Ben.

Rocco DiLuca, owner of DiLuca’s Italian Bakery, is not a happy camper. He’s just found out that his baby sister is getting married—to his former best friend—and he's not invited. But that's not even the worst part. They’ve hired someone else to make their wedding cake!

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Ae You Superstitious? ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week's RWW question is: "Are you superstitious?" It's a fun question, isn't it? But I I figured I'd b'd better double-check and see exactly what superstition is before I answered it. Merriam Webster defines suspicion as "a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation." Which sounds verrry judgy IMO.

Anyway, I'd say yes. I'm definitely superstitious in that I absolutely trust in magic and/or chance. Why would anyone not? How unimaginably boring would life be if you never trusted in things you didn't completely understand, or could completely quantify?

Not to mention--hello!--what sensible person doesn't occasionally fear the unknown? It's UNKNOWN! It could be something HORRIBLE!

So, yes, I cross my fingers and knock on wood, and say "Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit," first thing on the first of the month. I make a list of everything I'd like to accomplish in the new year every December, and set fire to it shortly after midnight January first. And I have little rituals I  go through every time I start writing a new book. Do any of these things make a difference? No...except that they make me feel better, and that's really the entire point.

I suspect you'd have to be at least a little superstitious (at least from time to time) in order to enjoy writing (or even reading) PNR. Which I do. My current series, Games We Play is only lightly paranormal. There are ghosts and a boggart, a curse, and an enchanted stone; but otherwise the series is completely contemporary.

The Name Game
A Games We Play Story

He knows what to do to save her business. She knows what he needs to fix his life!

Atlas Beach is experiencing a retail renaissance—and Carly Meyer is determined to be part of it. But she and her sandwich shop, The Lunch Box, are struggling to stay afloat.

Luckily, help is on the way thanks to the Chamber of Commerce’s innovative mentoring program—partnering successful Atlas Beach business owners with some of the newer start-ups. Too bad the mentor assigned to her is the delectable—and highly annoying—Tino DiLuca.

Tino knows exactly what’s been hurting Carly’s business and—exactly how to fix it. But his number one solution, changing the name of her signature sandwich, is the one thing she’s not prepared to do.

BAD BOY BANDLEADER
Brynn Paulin

Lottie:

No lie, I have always crushed on the bad boy of rock, Ryder McKenzie. In the privacy of my bedroom, I fantasized about getting away from my evil stepmother and maybe seeing one of his concerts. In all those dreams, I never imagined I'd suddenly be free and Ryder would be my rescuer.

Now, I'm on the road with my rock idol, acting as his assistant and fake girlfriend. Problem is, none of it feels make believe at all.

Ryder:

It's all real. Every single bit. Lottie is mine, and I don't care what anyone thinks about it. Now that I have my perfect girl, I'm never letting go.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ What Superpower Would You Choose? ~ #LoveChatWrite

This week on Romance Writers Weekly we're attempting to answer the question (which was posed by Leslie Hachtel): "If you could choose one superpower, other than being a writer, which one would it be and why?"

And, you know what?  I just don't know. Every super power that sounds great on the surface has a pretty significant downside to it. I didn't need Encanto to tell me that!

All in all, I think I'm going to have to go with remote viewing...which is actually something you can learn to do IRL. And I haven't yet. Interesting. Maybe I should actually get on that, huh?

I'm thinking the characters in my novella, Let Me Count the Ways (currently available as part of the A Season for Love anthology) would have benefitted from remote viewing. It would have allowed them to resolve their issues a whole lot faster. lol!

Romance Writers Weekly ~ What's Your Favorite Game? ~ #LoveChatWrite

This is my first time joining the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop. This week's question is: "What is your favorite game? Is it because you usually win or because it challenges you every time?"

When I first read this I thought, "hmm. I don't really play games." But then I remembered that I am somewhat addicted to online Mah Jong. That and Word Wipe are my go-tos when I'm stuck in a plot or have just finished writing an intense scene--or, really, any time that I  need a mental break.

My daughter's the one who introduced me to it, and she regrets it to this day because it's also a key component in my procrastination tool box.

I don't play to win, and while I have gotten better at it, I don't really do it for the challenge, either. I play because, on one hand, it's something I don't have to think too hard about; and on the other, I know I  won't get too involved with, or too distracted by. It's sort of like taking a shower, washing dishes, cooking, knitting, or anything else I might do while wrestling with a recalcitrant storyline--with the upside that I'm already sitting in front of my computer, so when the solution to the problem that's had me blocked suddenly presents itself, I  don't lose any time writing it down.

This Limited Edition Collection of Contemporary Romance includes my story, Let Me Count the Ways:

BLURB:  She's thinking fling, he's thinking forever.

Sexy former film star Claire Calhoun is used to having her pick of studly young men. Now that she and Derek have called it quits, however, the actress-turned-entrepreneur is feeling vulnerable. After one mojito too many at a party one night, she decides it would be fun to try something new-in this case, Mike Sherman, her staid accountant and long-time fan.

Claire has been Mike's fantasy since the first time he saw her bare it all for the camera. Now that she's in his bed he'll do whatever's necessary to keep her there. But he's not a stalker, right? He's just a devoted fan.

EXCERPT:

The gallery was crowded. The music was loud and not to my liking. And although some of the art on display was interesting enough, let’s face it; I wasn’t in the market for any more investments. I’d sunk almost everything I had into The Body Electric, which was still in its ‘hot new thing’ phase. Sure, business was good—for now. But who knew how long that would last?
Still, the evening wasn’t a total loss. The drinks were complimentary and the bartender was to die for. I sipped my mojito and looked him over once again.

He caught my look and smiled. “How is everything?” he asked, meaning my drink.

“Just delicious,” I replied, making sure he knew I didn’t.

Could I just say right here that I love men? For, oh, so many reasons. Just the sheer maleness of them. Even the sight of a five o’clock shadow on a rugged, square chin can turn me on. Can make my skin burn. Can make my fingers itch with the urge to touch and make me quiver as I imagine soft, sandpapery warmth in all my most sensitive places. Then there’s the strength in their hands, their fingers. The softness of their lips. The musk of their sweat. I swear those veins that stand out on their arms when they flex their muscles are enough, sometimes, to make me crazy. Not to mention the muscles themselves.

The bartender had it all going on—including a killer smile and a soulful, sweet expression beneath a pair of jet-black brows. He was an actor, of course. Just like everyone in this town. At least, everyone under twenty-five. That seems to be the cut-off. By twenty-six you know if you stand the ghost of a chance or are just marking time. If you’re still in the business at twenty-eight it’s because you’ve either tasted success or figured out that there’s nothing else you’re suited for.

When I was twenty-five, I thought I was Money. I had it made. It didn’t last. I wonder, sometimes, if it wouldn’t have been better—for me—if it hadn’t ever happened at all. Sure, I wouldn’t have been famous, but maybe I’d have been happy instead.

Some days it feels like I gave up a lot to get here. Others, it feels like I gave up too much. Still, even on those other days, fame does have its perks. Maybe especially on those days. I’m a name. I’m a face. And I could still recall how the game was played.

“What’s your name, sweetie?” I asked, getting into the role.

The bartender’s eyes lit up. “Javier,” he replied, with another deadly smile.

I pushed my glass across the bar and returned his smile with one of my own; every bit as lethal. “Well, Javier, the ice in my drink has begun to melt. Why don’t you be a darling and see if you can’t find a way to freshen it up for me, okay?”

His smile disappeared. “Right away, Miss Calhoun,” he said as he hustled away.

“Claire,” I murmured watching him run. Have I mentioned he had a nice butt, too? “Call me Claire.”

Would Javier sweetie really be quite so attentive if I was just a washed-up, not quite middle-aged, no-one-in-particular? Not bloody likely. But even tarnished stars still have some shine. No doubt he thought I could open doors for him. That I knew people who knew people who would give him a break. And maybe I did. Maybe I would. For a price.

Cold? Possibly. But don’t expect me to shed any tears over yet another aspiring Adonis. This town is full of them. And, male or female, we all have to pay our dues. There’s only one real difference between Javier and me and it’s this: when I was in his shoes I was wearing heels.

In less than a minute, he was back with a fresh new mojito. I smiled my thanks. “So, Claire, what are you doing after the party tonight?” he leaned in to ask, ambition gleaming brightly in those sweet brown eyes. No doubt he’d checked out the room while he was re-filling my drink. He’d obviously concluded that I was either the biggest name here or the easiest to hit on. Maybe both. The next move was mine.

Before I had a chance to make it, however... “Red wine, please,” a man’s deep voice ordered sharply. Startled, Javier scrambled back to work. I turned to find Mike looming menacingly behind me. He looked quite resplendent tonight, if a little grim, dressed in charcoal pin-stripes paired with an olive silk shirt.

“Nice suit,” I said, as I took it all in. “Fioravanti?”

Mike snorted in amusement. “Don’t I wish. No. Dolce and Gabbana.”

“Also nice.” I continued to study him, idly twirling the straw around in my glass. “You clean up good.”

“Thank you,” Mike said, shooting another stern glance in Javier’s direction. The slight clenching of his jaw drew my attention higher, to the small, brownish gold stone shining in his left ear lobe.

“Is this new?” I asked, reaching up to touch it, my fingers grazing his cheek as I did. Mike’s eyes widened into an astonished expression. His gaze flew to my face. “Oops.” I grinned. “Sorry. I guess my fingers are cold, huh?”

Mike shook his head. “No. Not at all.” Red stained his cheekbones. His skin felt very warm against my fingers.

“Liar.” Clucking my tongue, I withdrew my hand. My eyes, however, stayed locked with his and a familiar thrill ran through me. I love being desired. Who doesn’t? I love that flash of heat that flares in a man’s eyes when he wants you. I could see it in Mike’s eyes now and it made it hard to look away.

Aspiring actress Gabby Browne refuses to consider her best friend, and personal trainer, Derek Novello for the role of soul mate fearing sex will ruin their beautiful friendship. When she meets Zach, she's convinced that he could be The One. Too bad Derek isn't willing to share-leaving Gabby forced to choose between two sexy co-stars.

A quick trip to Gabby's hometown turns into the wedding from hell when Gabby and Derek are plagued by hailstorms, lost reservations, voracious goats, angry bees and enough family drama to fill a barn. Guess it's true what they say, "The course of true love never did run smooth." But can the happy couple hold it all together, or will their Big Day turn into a Big Mess?
