This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked to remember that writers are readers too and to "Write a review for a book within your genre."
The book I'm reviewing today is one I just finished reading--Hexed in Show, the latest in Gretchen Galway's Sonoma Witch series. This series is right up my alley: romance, mystery, suspense and witchy goings-on in a magical small California town. Sounds just like my Oberon series, doesn't it? And, by the way, the first in that series, Scent of the Roses is re-releasing today! Woo-hoo! Check below for details.
Hexed in Show continues the adventures of Alma Bellrose. I really liked this story--Alma is confident in her power, comfortable in her friendships, secure in her allies. The danger to her doesn't feel as personal as in some of the earlier books. Spoiler alert: that's so ironic! Also, there are magical garden installations that I desperately wish were real.
I am a notoriously picky reader when it comes to anything I feel I have a proprietary interest in. And the San Francisco Bay area (in particular the North and East Bay) definitely falls into that category. Nothing breaks through my suspension of disbelief faster than real-life details that fail to correspond with my own memories and experiences. This has been the case with a lot--dare I say most--of Galway's books. But I couldn't find anything that irritated me with this latest book. This is something I particularly appreciated because it's been two long years since the last book in the series, and I've been jonesing for a hit.

Scent of the Roses
Oberon Book 1.0
For twenty years, Scout Patterson has tried to run from the mistakes in her past. Now, she's finally coming home--to face the ghosts she's never laid to rest, and the love she thought she'd lost forever.
Memories of the girl he loved and lost, and dreams of what his life would be like, if he could only find her again are the only things that have gotten Nick Greco through the past twenty years.
Will Scout’s return lead to the second chance they’re both hoping for? Or will the evil which already nearly destroyed them once, triumph yet again?
